If you are new to fragrance, the words attar and perfume are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. The difference is not just about bottle shape or price. It is about composition, concentration and how the scent behaves on skin.
What is attar?
Attar is a concentrated oil based fragrance. It is traditionally made without alcohol and is applied directly to the skin in very small amounts. Because it is oil based, it sits closer to the body and releases slowly over several hours. A tiny drop is usually enough.
Attars are common in South Asian and Middle Eastern fragrance culture. They are often stored in small roll on bottles or glass vials with a dipstick. Their scent profile tends to be warm, resinous or floral, and they work well in hot climates because they do not evaporate as quickly as alcohol sprays.
What is perfume?
Perfume, in the modern sense, is an alcohol based spray. The fragrance oil is diluted in alcohol and sometimes water, then atomised onto skin or clothes. The alcohol helps the scent project more loudly at first, but it also means the top notes fade faster.
Perfumes come in several concentrations. Eau de parfum and parfum extract are the most common premium formats. The higher the oil concentration, the longer the scent usually lasts and the less you need to spray.
